Dr Syed K. Hasan, obtained his PhD and postdoctoral training in molecular hemato-oncology at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Rome 'Tor Vergata' in Francesco Lo-Coco's lab in Rome, Italy.  His notable contributions encompassed the elucidation of therapy-induced PML/RARA formation through targeting topoisomerase II. Furthermore, he explored the mechanisms underlying chromosomal translocations in therapy-related leukemias. After receiving the European Hematology Partner and Ramalingaswami fellowship, he started independent research at ACTREC. His laboratory is dedicated to unraveling the molecular mechanisms that drive the pathogenesis of acute myeloid leukemia, specifically focusing on acute promyelocytic leukemia. The ongoing research is primarily centered on dissecting the underlying mechanisms of targeted therapy and understanding the factors contributing to therapy resistance. These therapies precisely target the molecular abnormalities, leading to substantial improvements in the prognosis of the disease. In addition to his leukemia-related work, Dr. Hasan's laboratory also explores the tumor suppressor functions of pregnancy zone protein in the context of breast cancer.
